Sciatica, also known as sciatica syndrome, refers to back pain that’s caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve—a large nerve that runs from your lower back down the back of each leg. Sciatica can last for several days and in rare cases requires surgery to correct. For proper diagnosis and treatment of sciatica, call Spine and Sports Chiropractic in Lincoln.

What causes sciatica?

The two most common causes of sciatica are from a bulging or herniated disk in the lower back and from compression of the sciatic nerve by muscles in the outer buttock. Sciatica is also caused by injury or excessive pressure on the sciatic nerve. In rare cases, sciatica may result from tumors growing inside or along the spinal cord or sciatic nerve.

What are symptoms of sciatica?

The most common symptom of sciatica is lower back pain that extends throughout the hip and buttock and down one leg. The pain usually affects one leg and it may worsen when you sit, cough or sneeze if the pressure on the sciatic nerve is being caused by a bulging disc or if the sciatic nerve is being compressed by the muscles in your outer buttock, then standing and walking will cause the pain to shoot down your leg. Your leg might also feel numb, weak or tingly from time to time. These symptoms can appear suddenly and they can last for days or weeks. If you think you have sciatica, call us to set up an appointment immediately.

How we treat sciatica?

A heating pad or ice pack, pain relievers and stretching can provide short-term relief from sciatica. In some cases, we may recommend a steroid injection that helps to reduce inflammation. However, Active Release Technique (ART) chiropractic adjustments and physical rehabilitation stretches and exercises will usually alleviate and resolve all sciatic symptoms.

Did you know?

Most people who get sciatica are between 30 and 50 years old. Women are more likely to develop sciatica during pregnancy because of pressure on the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is different from traditional back pain because of the way pain radiates down the leg and into the foot. It might feel like you have a terrible leg cramp that lasts for days.
